Full-length Portrait of a Standing Woman

Flemish School, 17th century

Black chalk counterproof with brown framing line. Size of sheet: 25.5 x 15.7 cm.

Provenance: Freiherr Karl Eduard von Liphart (1808 Dorpat - 1891 Bonn) (Lugt 1687).

Freiherr Richard von Liphart (son of above), (Lugt 1758).

Very interesting counterproof by an artist in the circle of Rubens or Van Dyck. The drawing may have been intended to be used for print. The drawing has been done by a confident hand and is maybe by Justus Sustermans (1597 - 1681) and possibly related to the picture of Johanna of Austria. Johanna was married to Francesco I de'Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany and the mother of Marie de'Medici, the second wife of Henry IV of France and depicted by Rubens in the famous Medici Cycle. See exh.cat.Sustermans 1983, cat.no.1.
