Rest on the Flight into Egypt

Antonio Triva

* 1626 in Reggio † 1699 in Munich

Etching. Size of sheet: 16.6 x 20.6 cm.

Watermark: Two Moon Crescents.

Literature:     B.2;

                     Nagler 2 (I/II).

Provenance:   William Sharp (active mid 19th C), Lugt 2650.

Very good impression of the first state before the address of Remondini. With narrow margins all around the platemark.

While Bartsch knew of only four etchings, Nagler already counted thirteen, noting several distinct states. Triva was a student of Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, known as Il Guercino. In 1661 he was called to the court of the Elector Ferdinand of Bavaria where he remained until the end of his life.
