Andreana Dobreva
Recent Paintings, Drawings and Lithographs

Andreana Dobreva’s (b. 1982, Bulgaria) work fits into the tradition of a skilled group of contemporary artists, following John Currin and Glenn Brown, whose works are inspired by Old Master paintings. Although there is a recent movement of artists working in this tradition, it is not often we find an artist who masters the subjects as she does.

The contemporary movement of artists inspired by such paintings is very much divided. Some are very adept. Others stray more into the gimmicky side and lack consideration for reusing images. They simply collage Old Masters with no great taste or knowledge. Because of this we see artists like Dürer and Goya misappropriated too often, becoming formulaic. Dobreva, however, seems to understand the intentions of historical artists, and stands out due to her careful handling of subjects, inspirations, and technical skill.

When viewing the pictures, we encourage you to read the artist's very honest reflection which recalls her career since her beginning as training in icon painting. (In additional information)
