Carolus-Duran was a French painter. A friend of Manet and Fantin-Latour, he was a celebrated portraitist of the Third Republic high society. His most famous painting can be said to be La Dame au gant (1869) at the Musée d’Orsay in Paris. Another copy of this image is the collection of the Harvard Fogg Museum.
