Saint Luke. 1761-65.

Jean-Honoré Fragonard

* 1732 in Grasse † 1806 in Paris

Etching after Giovanni Lanfranco (Parma 1582 – Rome 1647). Size of plate: 12.2 x 9.3 cm. Size of visible sheet: 17.2 x 12.5 cm.

Literature: Baudicour 20.

                  Wildenstein 17 I/II

Lettered below the image 'Lanfranc a naple aux st apotre'. Fine impression of the first state of two before the number.

This etching is after a fresco by Giovanni Lanfranco in one of the pendentives of the church of Santi Apostoli in Naples, probably visited by Fragonard in 1761. Similarly to other fifteen etchings printed in Paris in the same years, the composition is based on black chalk drawings made by the artist in Italy for the abbé de Saint-Non.
