Inside of the Ruin at Troas, from Ionian Antiquities 1780
Paul Sandby
* 1731, Nottingham † 1809, London
Etching and aquatint in brown. Size of sheet: 36.7 x 54.7 cm.
Literature:
Gunn 274 (I/II).
Fine impression of the first state before the publication line, with thread margins. Slight discolouration on the left hand side. One of twelve prints made after drawings by William Pars (1742-1782) from a two-year expedition by the Society of Dilettanti to Greece and Asia Minor. The views Sandby chose to etch largely contain human figures. This print, which depicts ruins at Troas, in modern-day Turkey, features two men wearing turbans and smoking pipes, presumably locals.
