Malle Babbe

Jean Baptiste Bernard Coclers

* 1741 in Liège † 1817 in Liège

Etching. Size of sheet: 25.7 x 20.2 cm.

Literature: Le Blanc 2.

Very fine proof impression before any letters and from an uncleaned plate. With large margins all around. In fresh condition.

The image is inspired by (rather than copied from) the famous painting by Frans Hals of the same title (1629-30), now at the Staatliche Museum in Berlin (Grimm, 65).Hals’ works are rarely copied by printmakers. Coclers tries to capture Hals’ pastose painting style with this freely etched plate. Very rare.
