Portrait Study and Study of a Jawbone

Adolph Friedrich Erdmann von Menzel

* 1815 in Breslau † 1905 in Berlin

Pencil. Size of sheet: 23.5 x 7.5 cm.

Inscribed by the artist. Artist stamp verso.

In this exquisite and delicate drawing Menzel manifests himself as an accurate portraitist who takes the utmost care to meticulously record every characteristic detail of the sitter’s physiognomy. Menzel was a perfectionist amongst the portraitists of his time. This method is reflected in the early drawings of Käthe Kollwitz and our drawing certainly calls for a comparative study of both artists.
